Chinmay Sutar struck 400 not out on October 19 as Mizoram declared at 581/9d against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy Plate League. Nagaland were 50/1, trailing by 531. Other Plate matches saw UP, MP and Assam hold strong positions.

Chinmay Sutar wrote himself into Ranji Trophy history on Monday, becoming only the second Indian batter to reach 400 in a first-class innings as Mizoram piled up runs against Nagaland in Sovima.

The 29-year-old left-hander finished 400 not out before Mizoram declared at 581/9d (154.1) in their Plate League match at the Nagaland Cricket Association Stadium. Nagaland, replying late in the day, reached 50/1 in 13 overs and trailed by 531 at stumps.
Sutar’s innings, made from 517 balls with 46 fours and seven sixes, is the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history. Only Bhausaheb Nimbalkar’s 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49 stands above it.
It also pushed past Prithvi Shaw’s 379 to become the second-highest score in the competition, and placed Sutar alongside Nimbalkar as the only Indians to have crossed 400 in first-class cricket.
Mizoram’s declaration came after a long, bruising final-wicket stand that flipped the tone of the innings. When the last batter, Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak, arrived at 391/9, Sutar was already deep into a big score on 231. What followed was an unbroken partnership of 190 for the 10th wicket, taking the visitors past 500 and leaving Nagaland with a fielding day that refused to end.
Sutar was 392 at tea. He reached 400 in the 155th over, and Mizoram soon called their batters in at 581 for nine.
The milestone came in just Sutar’s second first-class match, according to reports, adding a sharp edge to a performance that already stood out for its sheer volume. Mizoram had closed the opening day at 331/5, but the innings threatened to lose momentum early on day two when wickets left them nine down before Sutar and Chhakchhuak shut the door.
Nagaland’s reply had only just begun by stumps. At 50/1, they face the immediate task of avoiding the follow-on while still more than 500 behind.
Sutar’s feat was the headline act of a day where several Plate League games moved decisively.
At the Meghalaya Cricket Association Cricket Ground, Meghalaya were bowled out for 380 in 101 overs, and Manipur reached 173/2 in 64 overs in reply. Manipur trail by 207 with eight wickets in hand, leaving the match poised for a long third day where first-innings parity is still possible.
In Guwahati, Assam’s 334 put Tripura under heavy pressure at Barsapara Stadium. Tripura were dismissed for 62 in their first innings and, following on, ended on 143/5. They trail by 129 with five wickets still to survive, but the deficit remains within reach if the lower order can extend the second-innings resistance.
At Green Park in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh built a strong position against Goa through a lead that has begun to stretch. After being bowled out for 202, Uttar Pradesh had Goa out for 164 and then moved to 102/4 in their second innings. The home side lead by 140, with the match set up for a push to bat once and bowl once more.
In Puducherry, Madhya Pradesh took control against the hosts at the CAP Siechem Ground. Puducherry were dismissed for 177 in 65.2 overs, and Madhya Pradesh replied with 302/5 in 96 overs to lead by 125 with five wickets in hand.
The 2026-27 Ranji Trophy is the tournament’s 92nd season and is being played from October 11, 2026, to March 3, 2027. With the early rounds still unfolding, heavy first-innings totals and long spells in the field often shape matches before results come into view.
For Mizoram, Monday’s declaration at 581/9d has already set the contest’s terms. The immediate question is whether Nagaland can bat long enough to force a second innings under less severe pressure, or whether Mizoram’s bowlers can turn the weight of runs into a quick path to a result.
Elsewhere, the day-three storylines are clear. Manipur’s top order has given them a platform to close the gap on Meghalaya’s 380. Tripura need one substantial partnership to erase Assam’s advantage and keep the match alive. Uttar Pradesh, with a 140-run lead and six wickets in hand in their second innings, have the chance to bat Goa out of the game. Madhya Pradesh, already 125 ahead with five wickets left, can press on for a bigger cushion before turning to their bowlers.
For all the familiar rhythms of Ranji cricket, it was Sutar’s innings in Sovima that reset the day’s scale. A score that once seemed untouchable for Indian batters in the modern era is now part of the current season’s record book, and it came not in a runaway top-order cruise but in the stubborn, last-wicket grind that made Nagaland’s task look even more unforgiving by the over.
