Editorial standards and corrections

How Wirony decides what to publish, how we check it, and what we do when we get it wrong.

Last updated:

Accuracy

  • Names, numbers, dates, scores and prices are checked before publication.
  • Where we can, we prefer primary sources – official statements, filings, results and original documents.
  • We do not invent quotes, sources or details. If something is unconfirmed, we say so or leave it out.
  • We separate fact from analysis and opinion, and say which is which.
  • Where a story depends on one source, we say so.

Attribution

Where information comes from a particular source and the reader benefits from knowing, we say so in the story.

Review before publication

Every story is reviewed by an editor and approved before it is published. Nothing goes live without a person signing off on it. Stories about health, money, elections and named individuals get particular care.

Dates and updates

Each article shows when it was first published and when it was last updated. We update stories as facts change. We do not change an article’s dates to make it look newer or older than it is.

Corrections and clarifications

If you think we got something wrong, email contact@wirony.com with the page address and what is wrong. We review every report.

  • Correction – we got a fact wrong. We fix it promptly and, where the mistake was material, note the correction on the article.
  • Clarification – the story was accurate but unclear or incomplete. We add the missing context and say so.
  • Update – new information changes the story. We add it and show the updated time.

Serious errors are corrected as quickly as we can confirm them; we do not quietly delete a published mistake.

Images and credits

We aim to use only images we have the right to use – our own, from licensed or free-licence libraries, or used with the owner’s permission – and we credit them where a credit is known. A picture that is a stock or file image and not from the event itself is labelled as a representative image. If you own an image that appears here without your permission, tell us through the contact page and we will review it and remove it promptly where that is justified.

Independence and conflicts of interest

  • Advertisers, sponsors and sources do not see or influence our stories before publication.
  • Advertising is kept separate from editorial content and is labelled as advertising. See the advertising policy.
  • If someone involved in a story has a personal or financial interest in it, they tell the editor and, where it matters, we tell readers.
  • We do not accept payment, gifts or favours in exchange for coverage.

Reader comments

Comments are moderated before they appear. We remove comments that are abusive, unlawful, misleading, spam or off-topic. A comment is the commenter’s view, not ours.

Health, money, elections and sensitive subjects

  • Coverage of health, finance and the law is for general information. It is not medical, financial or legal advice.
  • We do not publish content designed to mislead voters, and we do not spread health misinformation.
  • We take particular care with stories about children, victims of crime and people in distress, and avoid identifying people where that could cause harm.
  • We do not publish graphic violence for its own sake.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we handled a story or a correction, see the complaints process. We acknowledge every complaint and aim to resolve it within 15 days.
