Advertising policy
How advertising and sponsored content are kept apart from our reporting, and how to report an ad you think is wrong.
Last updated:
Our principles
- News and advertising are separate. Advertising does not decide what we cover, how we cover it, or whether we publish.
- Advertisers do not see or approve our stories in advance, and we do not write about advertisers in return for money.
- We do not let an ad pretend to be editorial content. Ads look different from stories and are labelled.
Advertising on this site
The site may show advertising. Any ad you see is labelled, and we sell or select it separately from our editorial work.
- Ads are labelled “Advertisement” (or “Sponsored” for direct placements).
- We do not place ads where they could be mistaken for navigation or buttons, and we do not use pop-ups that block reading.
- We do not encourage you to click ads.
Sponsored content
We do not publish sponsored articles at present. If that ever changes, sponsored material will be marked “Sponsored” at the top, will name the sponsor, will be visibly separate from our reporting, and will never be presented as independent journalism.
Personalised ads and your choices
We do not currently show personalised advertising. If that changes we will update this page, the privacy policy and the cookie policy first.
What we do not accept
We do not run ads that are misleading, deceptive or promise improbable results; that are illegal or promote illegal activity; that are sexually explicit, hateful or exploit tragedy; or that impersonate us, our journalists or other organisations.
Report an ad
If you see an ad that seems misleading, offensive or broken, email contact@wirony.com with the page address, a screenshot if you can, and what is wrong. We review every report and remove ads that break these rules.
