New York Road Runners introduced the NYC Marathon’s first route change in 15 years for 1 November 2026, adjusting the Bronx section around mile 20. The rest of the 26.2-mile, five-borough course remains largely unchanged, from the Verrazzano start to the Central Park finish.

New York Road Runners rolled out a revised course for the 1 November 2026 TCS New York City Marathon, marking the first change to the race route in 15 years and a rare tweak to one of the sport’s most familiar 26.2-mile layouts.
The update is concentrated in the Bronx, where runners will follow a slightly different set of turns before heading back to Manhattan. Organisers framed the adjustment as a minor reroute designed to reduce disruption in the borough while keeping the race’s five-borough identity intact during the 50th anniversary year of the modern citywide course.
The marathon, the 55th running of the event, again sends a field of more than 50,000 runners over bridges and through neighbourhoods that have become shorthand for the day: the climb out of Staten Island, the long Brooklyn stretch, the Queensboro Bridge, First Avenue’s crowds, a brief Bronx visit and a Central Park finish.
The biggest practical change comes after runners leave Manhattan for the Bronx around mile 20. After crossing the Willis Avenue Bridge, the 2026 route turns left on East 135th Street, then right on Alexander Avenue, left on East 141st Street, left on Third Avenue and right on East 138th Street to line up for the return to Manhattan.
It is a small shift on paper, but it matters in a race where veterans know every corner, camber and cheer zone. The Bronx section is traditionally brief, and in 2026 it remains a short passage before runners re-enter Manhattan via the Madison Avenue Bridge.
The rest of the course keeps the familiar rhythm. From Fort Wadsworth, runners climb onto the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, gaining early elevation before dropping into Brooklyn for the longest borough segment. The Brooklyn miles carry the field through Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Park Slope, Williamsburg and Greenpoint, with the start waves merging near mile 8 on Lafayette Avenue.
After the Pulaski Bridge into Queens, runners pass the halfway point in Long Island City before confronting the Queensboro Bridge climb around mile 15. The payoff comes at the bridge exit into Manhattan, where the route drives straight up First Avenue through East Harlem.
The closing miles follow the established script: southbound Fifth Avenue includes an uphill stretch near mile 23, then the course enters Central Park around 90th Street and finishes near West Drive and 67th Street, close to Tavern on the Green and Columbus Circle.
NYRR’s course preview materials put the marathon’s total elevation gain at about 810 feet (247 meters), a reminder that the race’s difficulty is as much about bridges and late rollers as it is about distance.
For runners, the course remains a tour of contrasts: wide avenues where pace can drift too fast, tight turns where momentum breaks, and stretches where sound travels like weather.
The opening climb over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is still the early test. It arrives before many participants have settled, and the descent into Brooklyn can tempt runners into banking time they will not be able to cash later.
Brooklyn’s 11-mile run is where the day often finds its shape. The neighbourhood sequence offers repeated resets, and the merge of start waves near mile 8 can change the feel of the road as crowds thicken and runners begin to sort into more stable packs.
Queens is short but pivotal. The Pulaski Bridge delivers the halfway mark, and then the Queensboro Bridge asks for patience at a point when spectators disappear and the race becomes quieter. Many runners treat the bridge as the line between the early marathon and the late one.
First Avenue is the counterpunch: open road, heavy noise, and a long gradual rise north that can feel effortless until it doesn’t. The Bronx interlude follows soon after, now with the updated turns, before the return to Manhattan and the long pull down Fifth Avenue.
Central Park, entered late, does not offer a gentle finish. The final miles come after the route has already asked for repeated climbs, and the park’s rollers can punish any early overreach.
NYRR has pointed runners and spectators to official course maps and tracking options through its course page, including an interactive map and downloadable PDFs. On a day when road closures and bridge shutdowns affect travel across the city, the route detail is not only a runner’s concern. It is also a logistics guide for families trying to plan where and when they can see a participant more than once.
The 2026 edition also arrives with a celebrity contingent. Reports ahead of the start said Jennifer Connelly, Tiki Barber and Patina Miller were among those set to run, adding to the day’s mix of elite racing, charity fundraising and personal milestones.
For competitive runners, the headline remains the same as ever: 26.2 miles, five boroughs, and a finish that comes only after the bridges and avenues have taken their share. For New York City, the notable change is that even a course famous for staying the same has found room for a small rewrite, at least for the Bronx miles, in a year built around remembering how long this version of the marathon has been part of the city’s streets.
