Rajinikanth's sequel collected Rs 477.75 crore worldwide by Monday night, with the biggest first Monday a Tamil film has had. On Tuesday India wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, who missed the opening show for a cricket event, hired an entire hall for his wife, friends and teammates.

Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 is five days old and within sight of Rs 500 crore. By 10 pm on Monday the film had grossed Rs 477.75 crore worldwide, and its fifth day, a working Monday, was the biggest first Monday any Tamil film has had.
On Tuesday one of its more famous fans finally got to see it. India wicketkeeper Sanju Samson booked an entire theatre so that his wife, his friends and the teammates and support staff who understand Tamil could watch it together. He had missed the opening show on 15 October because of a cricket event in Delhi. "I love watching Rajini sir's films and always look forward to his next release," he said. "I am really excited to watch Rajini sir on the big screen."
The sequel opened on Thursday to a net of 59.7 in India across 16,599 shows, its highest single day so far. Friday dipped, Saturday recovered and Sunday climbed again, and by the end of the extended weekend the worldwide gross stood at 424.25.
Monday was the day that set it apart. Most films lose half their Sunday audience on the first working day. Jailer 2 took about 42 net in India on 14,976 shows, more than 45 gross, with the Tamil version bringing in 30.5 of that and Telugu 6.46. No Tamil film had earned so much on its first Monday. Leo held the mark at 39.5; the first Jailer had managed 27.3.

The five-day India net stands at about 242, which already places the film among the ten highest-grossing Tamil productions in the country, and every tracker has it passing the 250 mark this week. The figures above are in crore of rupees and differ by a point or two between trackers, as they always do before final returns. Tuesday is Vijayadashami, a holiday across the south, and Wednesday follows it; distributors expect two more days near weekend levels, which would carry the worldwide total past 500 before the second weekend begins.
Nelson, who wrote and directed the film, brings back Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer of the 2023 original, this time on the trail of an idol-smuggling racket. Vidya Balan, S.J. Suryah, Ramya Krishnan and Suraj Venjaramoodu fill out the cast, with Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Hrithik Roshan among the guest appearances. Anirudh Ravichander wrote the music, Vijay Kartik Kannan shot it, and Sun Pictures produced it.
Rajinikanth turns 76 in December. The first Jailer, in 2023, reset expectations for what a Rajinikanth film could do with its star in his seventies, and the sequel is running ahead of that film's pace at the same point. It is also the first Tamil-language release to be given midnight shows in north India in its original language, a sign of how far the audience now stretches beyond the south. The Hindi-belt numbers are still small beside the Tamil and Telugu takings, but they were not there at all for the first film.
The schedule from here is kind. Vijayadashami on Tuesday and the day after are holidays across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and the Telugu states, the film's four strongest markets, and Diwali does not arrive until 8 November, so there is no comparable release in its way for three weekends. The trade's rule of thumb is that a film which holds its first Monday above two thirds of its opening Thursday will double its first week by the end of its run. Jailer 2 held it above seventy percent.
Reviews have split along a familiar line: the first half is praised for its pace and the star's ease, the second for its set pieces more than its story. Audiences have not been reading them. The Monday hold is the figure the trade watches, because it measures the people who came back from the weekend to tell others, and this one is the best a Tamil film has recorded.
Samson's booking says something about where Tamil cinema sits in the Indian imagination, and something about the cricketer. He is from Kerala, speaks Malayalam, and has never hidden his devotion to a star whose films he grew up on across the border. Booking a hall is the expensive way to fix a missed first-day show; it is also the way that lets a dressing room share it.
The timing was tight. India's men begin a five-match T20 series against New Zealand in Christchurch on Thursday, and Samson is in that squad. Tuesday was the window between an event in the capital and a long flight south, and he spent it in the dark with Rajinikanth. Which teammates joined him he did not say; the squad for Christchurch includes several players from the south, and the invitation, by his own account, went to the ones who could follow the film without subtitles.
For the film, every such story is free advertising on a day it hardly needs any. The question for Sun Pictures is no longer whether Jailer 2 will be the biggest Tamil film of the year but how far past the first film it can go, and whether the second weekend, with Diwali still three weeks away, holds up the way the first Monday did.
