Vijay Sethupathi’s Tamil film Baththa began streaming on Netflix on 29 October 2026, weeks after its 1 October theatrical release. Set in 1986 Madras, it follows a boy who traps a feared criminal in a school restroom, sparking an unlikely bond.

Baththa, the Vijay Sethupathi-led Tamil adventure-drama, began streaming on Netflix on 29 October 2026, bringing the 1980s-set film to home audiences less than a month after its theatrical run began.
The film, directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, is available on the platform in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam. It first released in cinemas on 1 October.
Set in 1986 Madras, the story follows a timid eight-year-old boy who accidentally locks a feared local criminal inside a school restroom. What begins as a child’s panic and a gangster’s rage shifts over days of isolation, hunger and forced stillness, as the two form an uneasy bond that alters both of them.
The streaming launch on Thursday gives the film a second push after a theatrical run that drew strong word-of-mouth but, according to reports, did not translate into the kind of footfalls usually expected for a Sethupathi vehicle.
That gap between reception and turnout has become familiar for mid-budget, idea-driven Tamil films in recent years: audiences discuss them, clips circulate, but the decisive opening weekend can still be elusive. With Baththa, the move to Netflix also widens access beyond Tamil-speaking markets, helped by multiple dubbed versions arriving at the same time.
The film’s premise has been described as both comic and tense, built around the simple, high-concept situation of a gangster trapped in a school toilet and the child who holds the key, knowingly or not. Reviews around the OTT release have pointed to the film’s tonal mix, balancing humour with the discomfort of confinement and the moral pressure on a child trying to manage a mistake that spirals.
Sethupathi plays the gangster, while the boy at the centre of the story is played by Master Sai Prithviraj. Lijomol Jose is also part of the principal cast, alongside Santhy Balachandran, Arjun Chidambaram and Ajay Ghosh.
Behind the camera, the film pairs Tharaneetharan’s writing and direction with music by Sai Abhyankkar. The technical crew listed in reports includes cinematography by Selva Kumar S K and editing by R Kalaivanan. Producers named in coverage include Priya Atlee, Alok Jain and Ajith Andhare, with the film presented by Atlee.
The plot’s engine is the unlikely relationship that forms through a locked door. As the criminal is cut off from food, allies and the control he usually exerts over his surroundings, the boy’s fear slowly gives way to conversation and, eventually, a kind of recognition. The film’s logline frames it as an “unexpected friendship” that transforms both lives, an arc that depends on Sethupathi’s ability to soften a threatening character without sanding down his menace.
The OTT release has also brought renewed focus to the film’s genre positioning. While it has been tagged as an adventure-drama with a runtime of 2 hours 38 minutes, some coverage around the streaming launch has leaned into its comedic set-ups and the chaos that follows from the child’s decision, accidental or otherwise.
For viewers coming to it fresh on Netflix, the hook is immediate and easy to grasp, but the story’s setting does more than provide period colour. Madras in 1986 shapes the film’s social codes: how fear travels in a neighbourhood, how adults respond to a “rowdy,” and how a child’s mistake can become a secret too heavy to carry.
The film’s arrival on Netflix on 29 October positions it for weekend viewing in multiple languages, at a moment when streaming platforms are stacking new releases to pull in audiences who missed films in theatres. For Baththa, that matters. Its central idea is built for conversation, and streaming is where conversation often turns into actual viewing.
