Gold is cheaper than it was ten days ago but about a fifth dearer than at last Dhanteras. City rates, the ten-day trend, what moves the price and how Dhanteras prices have behaved over the years.

Gold opens the week before the festive season a little cheaper than it was ten days ago, and well above where it stood last Dhanteras. On Thursday, 22 October, 24-carat gold is quoted at about Rs 14,607 a gram, or Rs 1,46,070 for 10 grams, and 22-carat at Rs 13,389 a gram. Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November, the start of the five-day Diwali festival, so buyers have a fortnight to watch the price.
These are indicative rates and exclude GST, which is 3 per cent, and jewellers' making charges, so the price you actually pay will be higher and will differ from shop to shop. For 10 grams of 22-carat gold at Rs 1,33,890, GST adds about Rs 4,017, bringing the bill to roughly Rs 1,37,907 before any making charges.
Most metros are quoted within a few rupees of each other. Delhi runs slightly higher.
| City | 24K (Rs a gram) | 22K (Rs a gram) | 18K (Rs a gram) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mumbai | 14,607 | 13,389 | 10,955 |
| Delhi | 14,622 | 13,404 | 10,970 |
| Chennai | 14,607 | 13,389 | 10,969 |
| Kolkata | 14,607 | 13,389 | 10,955 |
| Ahmedabad | 14,612 | 13,394 | 10,960 |

Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Kerala are quoted at the same Rs 14,607 for 24-carat as Mumbai. Rates also differ by source: another price tracker lists Kolkata at Rs 14,322 for 24-carat and Rs 13,640 for 22-carat on the same day, a gap of a few hundred rupees a gram, so check the figure your jeweller quotes against the day's rate on the exchange. In Delhi, 10 grams of 24-carat gold works out to Rs 1,46,220 and 100 grams to Rs 14,62,200. On the MCX futures market, gold is trading near Rs 1.46 lakh.
The price has slipped since the middle of the month. A gram of 24-carat gold cost Rs 14,968 on 12 October and has lost Rs 361 since, a fall of about 2.4 per cent. It steadied around Rs 14,744 to Rs 14,766 on 15 to 18 October, ticked up to Rs 14,804 on the 19th and then dropped on the 20th to Rs 14,608, where it has stayed.
Gold has slipped against a backdrop of oil near $108 a barrel, inflation worries, uncertainty in US-Iran relations and talk of interest rates. International spot gold is near $4,127.68 an ounce, with US December futures at $4,145.20, up 0.1 per cent in the latest session. The rupee matters as well, since a weaker rupee makes the same dollar price dearer in India.
A year ago, on Dhanteras 2025, 10 grams of 24-carat gold cost Rs 1,21,164. At today's Rs 1,46,070 it is about 21 per cent dearer, even after the recent dip. It is also about 8 per cent below the high in one set of monthly data, Rs 1,58,995 on 25 August this year. In 2026 the metal has swung: it rose 2.9 per cent in April, slipped in June and July, and gained 12.1 per cent in August, the strongest monthly move of the year.
| Dhanteras | Price (Rs per 10 g, 24K) | Change on a year earlier |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 47,674 | -6.62% |
| 2022 | 50,625 | +6.19% |
| 2023 | 60,746 | +19.99% |
| 2024 | 79,143 | +30.31% |
| 2025 | 1,21,164 | +53.12% |
Dhanteras prices have not always risen. They fell on the day in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 (marginally) and 2021. Festive-season gains are not guaranteed, and the usual guidance for long-term buyers is to spread purchases over several days instead of betting on one.
Ask for the day's rate in writing, check how making charges are being applied, and compare the final bill, not the per-gram rate. Look for the hallmark. Dhanteras puja timings differ from one almanac to another, and shops will be crowded, so many buyers book coins or jewellery in advance. Oil, inflation, US-Iran relations and interest-rate expectations are the main drivers cited for the recent moves.
