Several districts in Tamil Nadu declared a school holiday on Oct 26 as heavy rain and a cyclone warning raised safety concerns. Ramanathapuram and Dindigul shut schools, while orange alerts covered Pudukkottai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram.

Several districts in Tamil Nadu declared a school holiday for Monday, October 26 as heavy rain and a cyclone warning raised safety concerns for students, with local administrations moving to curb travel during spells of intense weather.
Reports said the decision was taken as the northeast monsoon, which began around October 15, continued to strengthen across parts of the state, bringing widespread rain and prompting alerts for coastal and interior belts alike.
In Ramanathapuram district, the collector ordered a holiday for schools only, citing heavy rainfall in the area. A similar order was issued in Dindigul district, where schools were also asked to remain shut for the day.
Weather warnings were also in focus in the southern and central districts. An orange alert was issued for three districts: Pudukkottai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram. The warning flagged the likelihood of heavy rain with thunder and lightning in parts of these areas.
The immediate trigger for the closures was a deep depression over the central-east and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal that strengthened into a low-pressure system. Forecasts indicated it could intensify further on October 26 into a cyclone, and then into a severe cyclone.
With that outlook, officials and school authorities weighed the risk of students commuting through waterlogged streets and during periods of poor visibility, especially in districts that have seen repeated downpours.
While the holiday orders referenced student safety, the announcements also reflected a familiar monsoon challenge: schools often become the first public service to pause when local roads, bus routes and low-lying neighbourhoods begin to flood.
The holiday was not described as statewide. Instead, the closures were reported as district-wise decisions, with residents advised to check local updates for their own areas.
The rain disruption lands as families begin looking ahead to the year’s remaining major public holidays, a period that typically brings a rush of travel bookings and school schedule planning.
Three major gazetted public holidays remain on the national calendar for 2026:
For now, the focus in parts of Tamil Nadu is on the next weather bulletin and whether the system over the Bay of Bengal strengthens as projected. Any further closures are expected to be decided locally, depending on rainfall intensity and district-level conditions.
Outside India, the word “holiday” was also being shaped by seasonal preparations rather than calendars alone.
In the US state of Oregon, professional climbers Spencer Hansen, 28, and Jeff Mortenson, 43, were reported to have worked on October 23 to replace failing LED lights on a giant metal star fixed to a basalt cliff above The Dalles. The effort included more than 150 feet of new LED lighting and was aimed at keeping the landmark lit through the holiday season.
In Canada, a new Christmas-season improv show featuring puppets was announced for Vancouver, aimed at audiences drawn to puppet-forward holiday theatre.
And in Australia, a lifestyle feature published early Monday pitched the idea of “bringing the Himalayas home” for the holiday season, pointing to food and hiking-inspired alternatives for those unable to travel.
Taken together, the updates underline how “holiday” can mean very different things on the same day: in one place, a precautionary shutdown because of dangerous weather; in others, the start of seasonal programming and decorations. In Tamil Nadu’s rain-hit districts, Monday’s holiday was about staying off the road.
