Karnataka Post continued counter sales of its Philately Passport on Oct 11 after long queues on the opening day. The ₹600 booklet is being sold in limited numbers at Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru and Belagavi, letting buyers collect PPC cancellations at designated post offices.

Sales of Karnataka’s Philately Passport continued on 11 October 2026 at four head post offices across the state, after heavy demand on the opening day sent collectors and heritage enthusiasts into long queues at Bengaluru’s General Post Office.
Each passport costs ₹600 and is being sold at Bengaluru GPO and the head post offices in Mysuru, Mangaluru and Belagavi.
The passport is designed like a travel diary. Buyers are meant to carry it to selected post offices linked to heritage and tourist locations, where they can add stamps and collect Permanent Pictorial Cancellations (PPCs) that mark the visit with a location-specific postmark.
Crowds began forming early on October 10 at the GPO on Ambedkar Veedhi in Bengaluru, with lines stretching beyond the premises towards the Press Club. By the end of the first day’s sale, the Bengaluru GPO had sold 1,500 passports. Another 2,000 were scheduled to be sold there on October 11.
The scene was repeated, on a smaller scale, in the other three cities. Mysuru, Mangaluru and Belagavi each sold 500 copies on October 10, with 1,000 more planned for sale at each location on October 11.
The state-wide sale has been organised with physical token distribution at the counters, and postal officials have kept it strictly offline. There is no online sale, no pre-booking, and no advance reservation.
The Philately Passport borrows the look and feel of a real passport, but functions as a collecting booklet. Holders can visit designated post offices tied to prominent sites and obtain a distinctive cancellation impression, along with stamps that match the theme of the journey.
For the postal department, the appeal is twofold: it draws new footfall to post offices and gives stamp collecting a travel hook. For buyers, the value lies in the set of PPCs, which are not generic date stamps but pictorial cancellations associated with a particular place.
Postal circles have used the passport format in recent months as a way to link philately with heritage awareness. In Karnataka’s version, the booklet includes information on important tourism locations in the state, and the collecting mechanic encourages travellers to build a trail of official marks across multiple centres.
The limited nature of the counter sale is part of the product’s pull. Passports are released in fixed batches during special windows such as National Postal Week, and the first-come, first-served model tends to reward people who arrive early.
In Belagavi, the distribution at the head post office drew visitors not only from the city but also from other parts of north Karnataka, including Hubballi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot and Raichur, according to reports from the local event. Organisers there described the passport as an attempt to bring younger people into philately and into post office spaces that many now visit only for essential services.
Alongside the passport distribution, the Belagavi head post office also offered a personalised stamp service during the programme. For a fee of ₹300, customers could get a set of 12 “special stamps” made in their family members’ names, which organisers said could be used for mailing across the country. The programme in Belagavi was scheduled over two days, including Sunday.
The Karnataka Postal Circle’s sale window aligns with National Postal Week, observed from October 9 to 15. Officials have pitched the Philately Passport as a bridge between collecting and domestic travel, with the postmark itself becoming a souvenir.
For many buyers, the immediate question is whether they can secure a copy at the counter before stocks run out. The postal department’s answer, for now, remains old-fashioned: show up, take a token, and wait your turn.
