Sir Patrick Stewart, the British actor who became known around the world as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, has died at the age of 86. His representative, Kelly Bush Novak, announced his death on Thursday, 29 October, in a statement shared on his social media. Reports say he died at his home in Los Angeles on 28 October.
The statement said that Stewart died "in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny." The cause was Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia, and the statement described his illness as a "brief and poignant journey." It is unclear when he was diagnosed. According to the statement, family and friends were around him, with live music, prayer, tears and laughter, and it spoke of the peaceful ease and reflection on his face and called his grace an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.
Stewart was born on 13 July 1940 in Mirfield, in England. He left school at 15 to pursue local theatre and later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, where he stayed until 1982. His television debut was in 1967 in the British soap opera Coronation Street, and his later screen roles included Antony and Cleopatra in 1974 and North and South in 1975. He was known as a stage actor for years before the roles that brought him fame.
In 1987 he was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the starship Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He played the role for seven seasons, from 1987 to 1994, and then in feature films and in Star Trek: Picard. Picard, a calm and cultured commander who preferred diplomacy to force, became one of the best-loved figures of the franchise.
In 2000 he was cast as Professor Charles Xavier, the founder and leader of the X-Men, a part he played in eight X-Men films over more than two decades. He is due to return to the role in Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to reach theatres on 18 December 2026.
