Hindi filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, the director of Kaante, Zinda and Kaabil and the producer of Shootout at Lokhandwala, has died in Mumbai at the age of 57. He died on Friday, 30 October. One report says that he suffered a head injury after a fall in the kitchen of his Mumbai home at about 2:30 pm. The cause of death has not been confirmed by his family, and details of the last rites have not been announced.
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news on social media and called it a great loss to the industry. Kunal Kohli, Kamaal R Khan and other film personalities also paid tribute, according to one report. Another report says that the cause of death had not been made public and that further details from his family and close associates were awaited. The news prompted grief across the Hindi film industry.
Gupta was a director, screenwriter and producer, and he founded the production company White Feather Films. He made his debut as a director with Aatish: Feel the Fire in 1994, which starred Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Pancholi. He worked mainly in Hindi crime and action films, and he is credited with shaping the Hindi crime thriller with stylised storytelling and a neo-noir look. His films often focused on the Mumbai underworld and gangland conflicts and are noted for high-contrast visuals, stylised lighting and strong sound and action design.
He is known mainly for remakes of American action-thriller and crime films, and he frequently cast Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham. In December 2019 he announced that his company had acquired the rights to Rakshak, a graphic novel about a vigilante superhero, for a film that he would direct.
Kaante, released in 2002, is described as his most recognised film. It is a crime thriller with an ensemble cast that included Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty, and it developed a cult following. It earned him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Director, though he did not win.
Shootout at Lokhandwala, released in 2007, was inspired by the 1991 shootout at the Lokhandwala Complex in Mumbai. He produced it, and it starred Vivek Oberoi, Sanjay Dutt and Amitabh Bachchan. He later directed Shootout at Wadala in 2013.
