Searches for the next Rs 2,000 payment are among India's top trends, but no release date has been announced. The 20 October date in viral posts is a guess and the Rs 4,000 claim is fake. Here is what is confirmed, who is eligible, why payments stall and how to check.

Farmers searching for the 24th PM-KISAN instalment have found plenty of dates this week and no official one. The government had not announced a release date in the latest reports we could find, and nothing in Wednesday morning's coverage changed that. The 20 October date that has been going around on social media is simply four months after the 23rd instalment, which was paid on 20 June, and several outlets describe it as a guess. The agriculture ministry usually announces the date a few days before the Prime Minister releases an instalment.
The amount is Rs 2,000 per eligible family, three times a year, or Rs 6,000 annually. The 23rd instalment was released on 20 June 2026 from Tarakeswar in West Bengal's Hooghly district: more than Rs 18,880 crore went to over 9.44 crore farmers, including 2.18 crore women. The 22nd came on 13 March from Guwahati. Since February 2019 the scheme has paid out more than Rs 4.46 lakh crore across 23 instalments, and this year's Budget set aside Rs 60,000 crore for it.
The viral claim that every farmer will now receive Rs 4,000 is false. The scheme's official social media account called it fake: "This claim is fake. No such official announcement has been made. A farmer can receive Rs 4,000 in one go only if an earlier instalment was held up for a reason that has since been fixed and the payment is then approved. The scheme's FAQ lets the government pay all dues in such cases, except to farmers rejected under the exclusion rules. Nothing about it is automatic. In Maharashtra a separate state scheme, the Namo Shetkari Mahasanman Nidhi, adds Rs 2,000 per instalment on top, and its next date has not been announced either.
To qualify, a family needs cultivable land in the farmer's own name, entered on the portal by the state. Tenant farmers are not eligible, though inherited land counts. The bank account must be linked to Aadhaar and enabled for direct benefit transfer, and e-KYC is mandatory.
The exclusions are long. They cover institutional landholders; families in which any member is a current or former minister, legislator, mayor, district panchayat chairperson or holder of a constitutional post; serving or retired government employees, except multi-tasking staff and Class IV or Group D workers; pensioners drawing Rs 10,000 or more a month; anyone who paid income tax in the last assessment year; and practising doctors, engineers, lawyers, chartered accountants and architects. States have already recovered Rs 416 crore from people who were paid despite being ineligible, as of August 2025.
When an instalment does not arrive, the cause is usually one of five things. The e-KYC may be missing or not showing. The land record may be marked "No" or not yet verified by the state. The bank account may not be linked to Aadhaar, or its IFSC code may not match. The name on Aadhaar may differ from the name in the PM-KISAN record. Or the payment may be on a temporary hold for verification, for example where land was acquired after 1 February 2019 or more than one family member is drawing the benefit.
To check your own status:
In some states, Uttar Pradesh among them, eligible farmers must also hold a 12-digit Farmer ID from the state's Kisan Registry, so it is worth asking the local agriculture office whether one is required. e-KYC can be done with an OTP on the portal or the app using the mobile number linked to Aadhaar, with a fingerprint at a Common Service Centre, or with face authentication on the PM-KISAN app, where one farmer can help up to 100 others. A completed e-KYC can take about 24 hours to show. The toll-free helpline is 155261 or 1800-11-5526, and the Kisan-eMitra chatbot answers questions in 11 languages.
Checking your status is free. Never share an OTP with anyone who claims they can release your instalment.
There is one more thing farmers can do before the date is announced: make sure nothing on their side is holding the money back. Confirm that the Aadhaar number is linked to the bank account that receives the payment, that the name matches the land record, and that the e-KYC status reads "Yes". Where the state has not verified a land record, the farmer's local revenue or agriculture office is the place to ask. The central government funds the scheme in full, but the states verify who is on the list.
