Harry Brook became England's first ODI double centurion with 202, reaching 200 in 114 balls, the fastest ever, in a total of 429 for 4. Sri Lanka then made the second-highest successful chase in ODI history, winning by two wickets with a ball to spare.

Harry Brook has scored the fastest double century in one-day international history, and England still lost. The England captain made 202 in the tri-series match against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi on Thursday, 22 October, reaching 200 in 114 balls, and England finished on 429 for 4. Sri Lanka then chased it down with a ball to spare, winning by two wickets in what is the second-highest successful chase in ODI history.
Brook's 202 came off about 115 balls, with the reports putting the figure between 114 and 116, and included 21 fours and 10 sixes, which is 144 runs in boundaries, the most by an England batter in an ODI innings. He reached 50 off 42 balls, 100 off 75 and 150 off 97, and was caught off Janith Liyanage on the last ball of England's innings. His second hundred came in just 39 balls, and late in the innings he hit a paddle sweep off Janith Liyanage in the final over. Sri Lanka's captain, Kusal Mendis, had won the toss and chosen to field. Liyanage, who took Brook's wicket, went on to score 61 in the chase.
His 200 beat Shubman Gill's fastest double century, which was 116 or 117 balls, depending on the report, against the West Indies in Guwahati about three weeks ago. Brook is the first England batter to score an ODI double century, beating Ben Stokes's 182 against New Zealand in 2023, and only the second non-opener to reach 200 in an ODI after Glenn Maxwell. It is also the highest ODI score by an England captain, passing Andrew Strauss's 158 at the 2011 World Cup. His previous best was 136 off 66 balls against Sri Lanka in Colombo earlier this year, and on Thursday it was his fourth ODI hundred, reached in 75 balls.
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field. England were 85 for 2 in the 16th over, after Tom Banton made 50 and put on 74 with Ben Duckett in the powerplay. Brook then added 159 for the third wicket with Joe Root, who made 69, and a rapid stand with Will Jacks, who finished on 66 not out. Brook and Jacks scored 156 in the last 10 overs, according to one report; other reports give different figures for that partnership. The total of 429 for 4 is England's fourth highest in ODIs and the highest by any team in Pakistan.
Sri Lanka's bowlers were hit hard: Eshan Malinga conceded 91 runs in 10 overs without a wicket, and Dilshan Madushanka 89. Dasun Shanaka, playing his first ODI in more than two years, went for 74 in six overs, and Dunith Wellalage took 2 for 56.
Sri Lanka needed 430, and Pavan Rathnayake made 130 off 106 balls to lead it. Dasun Shanaka scored 97, Avishka Fernando 97, each three short of a century, and Janith Liyanage 61, and Sri Lanka won by two wickets with a ball remaining. Only one team has made a bigger successful chase in ODIs. The match was a reminder that a huge total is not safe when the chasing side bats as well, and it left England still without a win in the tri-series.

England have now lost both of their matches in the tri-series. Pakistan beat them by 87 runs in the earlier match on 20 October, with Arafat Minhas scoring 59 and taking 6 for 40, and Sri Lanka had lost their opening game to Pakistan as well, so Thursday's win was their first of the series. England's performance is a boost ahead of the 2027 World Cup, but the result will worry a side that conceded 430. For Brook it is a record, in a match his team lost.
