The finish came down to the last handful of deliveries after India surged late, but England’s bowlers found enough execution at the death to close out a match that swung sharply with almost every over in a format where a single mis-hit can decide the day.
England’s 124 for 2 in six overs underlined the ruthless pace of the Sixes format, where a par total can be chased down in minutes and totals above 100 still feel vulnerable. India needed 125 to win, a stiff ask even in a tournament built for boundary-hitting.
India’s reply stayed alive deep into the chase. A mid-innings wobble left the pursuit wobbling, but the scoring rate never drifted far from reach because the boundaries kept coming. With the target in sight, the match tightened into a shootout between England’s execution and India’s ability to keep finding the rope.
The decisive moments arrived right at the end. India finished on 121 for 4, three short, leaving England to celebrate a win that was as much about holding nerve as it was about scoring freely at the start.
India’s chase was lit up by Rahul Tripathi, whose 14-ball 56 gave the pursuit its shape and its belief. In a game of six overs, that kind of burst can end a contest before it begins. Instead, it became the innings that nearly pulled off a chase that had no margin for error.
Tripathi’s acceleration forced England to defend under pressure, and it dragged the required rate back into a range where a couple of big hits could have flipped the result. India, though, could not quite keep a batter set through the final phase, and the late scramble for runs left too much to do.
The defeat extended a rough run for India in the tournament. The side had already lost to Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates earlier in the competition, and the narrow semi-final loss ended their campaign.
While Saturday’s contest was played in an exhibition-style format, the result added another entry to a rivalry that has been busy across formats in 2026.
In the men’s international calendar, England had the better of India in the white-ball series during India’s tour of England in July. The five-match T20I series finished 4–0 to England, with the first match abandoned due to rain. In the ODI leg, England won 2–1, taking the deciding third match at Lord’s after defending 387.
India, however, had the upper hand when the stakes were highest earlier in the year. The teams met in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final in March at the Wankhede Stadium, where India won by seven runs on the way to the title.
On Saturday in Hong Kong, the margins were just as fine, but they fell England’s way. In a format designed to turn cricket into a sprint, the game still ended the old-fashioned way: one side a couple of hits short, the other side just far enough ahead to survive the final over.
