Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu says postgraduate medical seats in Himachal Pradesh's six government medical colleges have risen from 277 to 597, an increase of 320. IGMC Shimla now has 230 seats, and the state aims for 80 to 85 per cent doctor availability next year.

Himachal Pradesh has increased the number of postgraduate medical seats in its six government medical colleges from 277 to 597, an addition of 320 seats. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu gave the figures on Sunday, 18 October, while answering questions from the media in Shimla after inaugurating Blocks 1 and 2 of Phase IV of the Armsdale Building at the state secretariat.
The announcement matters because postgraduate seats decide how many specialists a state can train for itself. A larger intake means more doctors in medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and the other branches that district hospitals struggle to staff, and the doctors who train in a state are more likely to take up posts there.
The new seats are spread unevenly across the six colleges, and the biggest jumps are at the colleges that had started from a very small base. Overall, the number of seats has more than doubled.
| College | Earlier seats | Now | Added |
|---|---|---|---|
| IGMC Shimla | 139 | 230 | 91 |
| Tanda (Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College) | 99 | 156 | 57 |
| Mandi | 24 | 79 | 55 |
| Hamirpur | 8 | 65 | 57 |
| Nahan | 3 | 35 | 32 |
| Chamba | 4 | 32 | 28 |
| Total | 277 | 597 | 320 |
Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla and the Tanda college remain the largest, between them holding 386 of the 597 seats. But the relative change is sharpest in the newer colleges. Taken together, Mandi, Hamirpur, Nahan and Chamba had 39 of the state's 277 seats, about 14 per cent. They now have 211 of 597, or roughly 35 per cent, so the capacity is no longer concentrated in two cities. Hamirpur went from 8 seats to 65, Nahan from 3 to 35 and Chamba from 4 to 32, which means that colleges that offered almost nothing at the postgraduate level a short while ago now have a real department structure to build on.
Sukhu linked the expansion to a target of raising doctor availability in government medical colleges to between 80 and 85 per cent by next year. He also said that expanding infrastructure is essential for development and that his government is giving it priority. The numbers released so far are the state government's own, and an approval by the National Medical Commission for the additional seats has been mentioned in some commentary but has not been confirmed in the official figures.
That caveat is worth keeping in mind. Postgraduate seats exist only so long as a college has enough teaching faculty, equipment and patient load for each department, and the regulator checks those conditions. A seat that has been announced and a seat that has been filled and is producing graduates are separated by admissions, counselling and then three years of training.
The multiples are larger still when read college by college. IGMC Shimla grew by about 65 per cent and Tanda by about 58 per cent. Mandi's seats more than tripled, Hamirpur and Chamba each grew about eightfold, and Nahan went from 3 seats to 35, nearly twelve times. Those increases are so steep because the base was so low, but they are also where a new department will have to be staffed from scratch.
The announcement was made at the inauguration of two administrative blocks, not at a health event, and it came in reply to a question from reporters. That is why it carries the totals and the college-wise split but not the usual details of a policy decision, such as the funding, the number of new faculty posts or the date from which the seats are open for counselling.
For patients, the effect will not be immediate. The first batches trained on the new seats will take years to complete their degrees. In the meantime, the state still has to deal with vacancies, with the transfer of senior doctors between hospitals and with the long distances from remote districts to the larger colleges.
The more useful test will come in how many of the new seats get filled in the next counselling round, and how many of the doctors who finish the courses stay in the state's government service. If the answer to both is a large share, the jump from 277 to 597 will be one of the more significant steps in the state's recent health policy. If not, the seats will remain a number on paper.
