EPFO has extended the deadline for September 2026 PF ECR filing and deposit to October 31, from October 15. The move follows a mid-month wage-ceiling revision that required payroll and contribution recalculations.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for employers to file the monthly Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and deposit statutory provident fund contributions for the September 2026 wage month to October 31, 2026, giving companies 16 extra days beyond the earlier cut-off of October 15.
The move follows a mid-month change in the provident fund wage ceiling that forced many employers to revisit payroll settings, contribution bases and employee-wise calculations before submitting the return. The ECR is the mandatory monthly filing that captures wage details and contributions under the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit-Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme.
Reports said the extension was communicated through an EPFO circular dated October 13.
The September 2026 wage month became an outlier because the PF wage ceiling was revised during the month. Until September 16, the earlier ceiling of ₹15,000 applied. From September 17, the ceiling was raised to ₹25,000, subject to the applicable scheme rules and employee eligibility.
That split created a practical problem for payroll teams and software systems that typically apply one set of parameters for a full wage month. Employers had to examine how rules applied before and after September 17, rather than using a single ceiling for the entire month.
The change also carried a compliance risk. A rushed filing could mean incorrect wage reporting, wrong contribution amounts, or misclassification under EPF and EPS for some employees. The extra time is meant to help employers complete submissions accurately after updating payroll configurations and verifying employee records.
Employers were also cautioned in reports not to treat the revised ceiling as an automatic instruction to calculate every employee’s contributions on ₹25,000. The applicable contribution base depends on individual circumstances and the scheme rules, and firms are expected to check employee-wise treatment before filing.

For many workers, those entries are what eventually show up in the EPFO passbook as monthly credits once the employer’s filing and payment are processed. Because September’s ceiling change happened mid-month, payroll departments have had to re-check contribution calculations and, in some cases, update employee details linked to the return.
The extension is specific to the September 2026 wage month. Reports said it is not intended to become a routine relaxation.
For employers, the immediate next step is to complete the September wage-month ECR filing and deposit the statutory dues by October 31. Companies that were ready to file earlier can still do so; the EPFO’s decision simply expands the compliance window.
For employees, the filing is not something they submit themselves, but the money belongs to them. Reports advised workers to check their EPF passbook after the extended deadline to confirm that September contributions were credited.
The mid-month ceiling revision has also made September a month where employees may want to pay closer attention to what wage figure was used for their contributions and whether the employer applied the correct treatment for the period before and after September 17.
While the EPFO has provided additional time to file, the obligation to deposit and report correctly remains with employers. The extended window is intended to prevent errors that can take months to reconcile, especially in large establishments where payroll changes must be tested across systems before the ECR is generated and uploaded.
