Garena said Tuesday that Free Fire India will be available to download on October 28, 2026 as a standalone app on iOS and Android. The release includes India-focused events and responsible gaming features, while Free Fire MAX remains separate.

Garena on Tuesday said its India-specific version of Free Fire will be available for download from October 28, 2026, ending years of uncertainty around the battle royale title’s return to the country.
The company said Free Fire India (FFI) will launch as a standalone app on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. It described the release as a localised build aimed at Indian players, with India-focused content and built-in checks meant to encourage responsible play.
Vaibhav Das Mundhra, Head of Operations, India at Garena, said: “India is home to a passionate community of players, creators and esports talent, and we are grateful for their continued enthusiasm and support. With FFI, our focus is on providing a familiar and engaging gaming experience that is thoughtfully tailored for players in India, while encouraging safe and responsible play. This new game reflects our long-term commitment to India’s gaming community, and we look forward to supporting more opportunities for players to enjoy gaming, connect with one another”.
Garena’s announcement comes after a long delay. The India version had been slated to release on September 5, 2023, but was postponed indefinitely while the company worked on local requirements around data infrastructure, player safety measures and compliance.
Garena is positioning FFI as a separate download from Free Fire MAX, its existing title that has remained active and supported in India. The company said Free Fire MAX will continue as a different app aimed at players using higher-specification devices, while FFI is designed to run across a wider range of phones, including lower-end handsets.
Alongside the familiar fast-paced battle royale format, Garena said the India build will ship with a set of responsible gaming features. Those measures include mandatory parental consent for players under 18, break reminders, playtime limits and caps on in-game spending.
The launch will also be accompanied by local in-game programming. Garena said FFI will run events and campaigns tied to Indian cultures and communities, including a Diwali campaign scheduled to run until November 15.
The company has also said the India release will be backed by Indian servers and local content, with plans to support the esports ecosystem around the title.
Free Fire’s return has been closely watched by India’s mobile gaming community, particularly after the original game was among apps blocked by the Indian government in February 2022. Garena’s plan to bring back a localised version has been public for years, but without a firm date until Tuesday.
In the run-up to the announcement, community speculation had centred on a late-October launch, fuelled by changes across official regional handles and creator chatter. With Garena now naming October 28 for availability on Android and iOS, the focus shifts to rollout timing on app stores and the first set of India-specific events.
Garena has not, in the material available on Tuesday, detailed whether downloads will open at a specific hour on October 28 or whether access will be phased. What it has confirmed is the distribution plan: a free download through the two major mobile app stores, as a standalone title distinct from Free Fire MAX.
For existing players, the immediate practical question will be how FFI sits alongside Free Fire MAX in day-to-day play, and whether players will choose one app based on device performance or community migration. Garena’s messaging suggests it wants both to coexist, with FFI widening reach and MAX remaining the option for higher-end phones.
The company is also heading into a busy competitive calendar. The Free Fire World Series (FFWS) Global Finals begin on November 6, and recent upticks in activity around India channels had been interpreted by many players as a sign of a return timed around the global event window.
For now, the key development is the date itself. After a planned 2023 relaunch slipped with no clear timeline, Garena has put a day on the calendar for India’s dedicated Free Fire app, and tied it to a slate of local events and safety guardrails that will shape how the game is played and promoted in the country.
