Sensex and Nifty fell for a fourth straight session on Oct 23, closing at 73,123.83 and 22,600.00 as oil and West Asia tensions weighed. Mid- and small-caps saw much steeper losses, though benchmarks recovered from intraday lows.

Indian shares ended lower on Friday, 23 October 2026, extending a run of declines to a fourth straight session as investors stayed cautious amid West Asia tensions and a jump in crude oil prices.
The BSE Sensex closed at 73,123.83, down 125.56 points, or 0.17%. The NSE Nifty 50 settled at 22,600.00, lower by 87.65 points, or 0.39%. Both benchmarks finished well off their intraday lows after a late rebound, but the broader market remained under sharp pressure.
A volatile day of trade saw early gains fade quickly. The Sensex had climbed to an intraday high of 73,761.51 before sliding as much as 1,279 points from that level. The Nifty swung from a high of 22,787 to test the 22,400 zone during the day.
By the close, the headline indices looked relatively contained compared with the damage in mid- and small-cap stocks, where selling was heavier and more persistent.
The retreat was far steeper beyond the top 50 and top 30 stocks. The Nifty MidCap 100 fell 2.21%, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 dropped 2.94%, reflecting risk aversion and profit-taking after a period of strength in the broader market.
On the BSE, the midcap and smallcap gauges also posted deep losses. The BSE 150 MidCap index ended down 2.10% at 15,143.47 and the BSE 250 SmallCap index fell 2.68% to 6,440.65.
Some individual names saw outsized moves. Jammu and Kashmir Bank fell more than 16%, while Swiggy dropped about 17%, according to reports.
The sell-off also showed up in market wealth. BSE market capitalisation was reported to have slipped to about 451 lakh crore rupees, around 7 lakh crore rupees lower than the previous session’s level of 458 lakh crore rupees.
Crude prices were a central driver of the day’s caution. Brent crude was reported above $114 a barrel, a level that tends to sharpen concerns for India around imported inflation, corporate input costs and currency pressure.
The other overhang was geopolitical risk tied to West Asia. That mix kept the market in a risk-off mood for much of the session and helped extend the losing streak to four sessions, with reports also flagging foreign investor outflows.
Sectoral performance showed how broad the pressure was. Metal, realty and PSU bank shares were among the laggards, while IT stocks held up better than most pockets of the market. Bank Nifty underperformed, falling 1.16% as financial counters faced selling.
In sector terms, the sharpest declines were reported in metal (down 2.71%), consumer durables (down 2.63%) and realty (down 2.38%). Energy (down 1.66%) and financial services (down 1.03%) also weighed.
Despite the weak tape, buyers did appear in select names late in the day, helping the benchmarks recover from deeper cuts. Reports pointed to support from some IT and bellwether counters, while a few stocks such as Eternal, Apollo Hospitals and ONGC were mentioned among gainers.
The intraday bounce has put focus on the 22,400–22,500 region for the Nifty, where demand was seen as the index rebounded from its day’s low. Still, the close at 22,600 left the market looking fragile rather than settled.
Analysts said holding 22,500 could support a mean-reversion move toward 22,800–22,900, while a break below that area may open the way to 22,300 and 22,200. A sustained close above 22,900, they added, would be needed before the current decline can be described as stabilising.
For investors, the next few sessions are likely to hinge on whether crude stays elevated and whether geopolitical tensions ease or intensify. Until then, the pattern of sharper losses in mid- and small-caps suggests traders are trimming risk even when the frontline indices manage to mask some of the stress.

Brent crude settled at $116.72 a barrel on Friday, its highest close since 29 April and the third weekly gain in a row. The rally rests on expectations of a US and Israeli strike on Iran after the US midterms and Houthi attacks on Saudi targets, not on a confirmed loss of supply.
