A 21-year-old man, Hemanth, attacked a 15-year-old Class 10 girl with a chainsaw in a Zilla Parishad High School classroom in Raptadu, Anantapur, on 31 October, in front of a teacher. She was moved to Bengaluru in critical condition. A second girl was hurt trying to stop him; he has been arrested.
Five people were shot dead and one injured at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati's Ulubari on Monday night. Police arrested Ghanakanta Gogoi within an hour and seized a licensed .32 bore pistol. A dispute over the hotel's lease is under probe. Four of the dead were from the owner's family.

Two suspected steel bombs exploded in Kannavam in Kannur district, near the forest range office and at nearby Chundayil, between 11.30 pm on Sunday and midnight. Windowpanes were broken and no one was hurt. Police have registered a case under the Explosive Substances Act; no suspect is named.
